Rionegro was the only site we flew where a "normal" conventional
landing approach was possible: down-wind, cross-wind, final.
The Jose Maria Córdoba International Airport —JMC is located
in the valley below the slope in Rionegro. A Boeing 747 cargo plane
landed there while we were flying, and recently, JMC was one of two
airports
chosen
to test
high-altitude operations of the Airbus A-380.
Access to the slope is restricted, but we were invited to fly there. Situated at about
8000 feet elevation, lift was mostly thermals passing through while we were
there, but one could maintain during the sink cycles by flying out beyond
the first tree line.
