I wanted to keep the natural wood finish, so I used water-based Deft. It works really well, cleans up with water, and lacks the nasty fumes of laquer-based stuff, so you can apply it indoors; it does take a little longer to dry. Light sanding was needed after the first two coats only, and I applied a total of 5 coats.
